Bigger is better?

A lot of car makers are shying away from bigger engines these days. Few examples would be the companies that produce supercar. Back in the old days, a V12 engine would probably be a signature dish to any company when coming up with new flagship. Lamborghini to name a few, despite having only four models that extend to half a century, insists on having a V12 on their new battle cruise, the Aventador.

Other company however, is not so keen in keeping up with the tradition. A sudden surge of awareness on the environment had made company such as Ferrari, Porsche and Aston Martin to name a few has opted for a V8 engine equipped with either a single or twin turbo. There is also younger company like Koenigsegg that also produce models with V8 engine but of course it comes along with a super charger.

Then again, those are the examples in the world of the rich and famous. For commoners like you and me, having a car with a 4 cylinders engine is a no brainer. What is the point of having a car with V engine that would make a petrol station as his natural territories? The money that we own would probably be better off with something else. However, looking at this latest trend in producing cars with smaller engine, it is worthwhile mentioning that it has also affected company that produce global cars such as Toyota, Honda and Nissan to name a few.

Ford for example, produced a car with a 1.0 liter engine but turbo charged it to produce power of more than 100bhp. That would probably unheard of 20 years ago but it is very common these days. Even the local player like Proton has stacked their chips on the latest model, the Preve, that comes with a 1.6 liter turbo charged engine. That would make it a decent contender to its older brother, the naturally aspirated 2.0 liter Inspira.

I would reckon that any time soon in the near future, cars can only produce engine with lower cc and a turbo set would become a standard feature. That would make the engine use less fuel but at the same time still produce decent bhp for an occasional need of speed to some people.
